Equally at home in a dusty paddock or on stage at the Opera House, Calrossy Anglican School is proud to present Shanna Whan, the 2022 Australian of the Year (Local Hero), as our guest speaker on Monday , November 11 . This free community event, supported by the Calrossy Parents and Friends Association, is a unique opportunity for Tamworth residents to hear Shanna’s powerful message about resilience, overcoming adversity, and the importance of community support.
After almost losing her life to alcohol addiction in 2015, Shanna turned her struggle into a mission to change lives across rural Australia. As the founder of Sober in the Country , she has become a national voice for tackling alcohol harm in the bush, using her own story to inspire hope and action.
An Evening of Inspiration and Change Shanna’s story of survival, advocacy, and leadership resonates deeply with anyone who has faced challenges or supported others through difficult times. Her grassroots work has sparked a cultural shift, encouraging people to embrace the idea that it’s always #OK2SAYNO to alcohol in rural settings.
This evening is designed for parents and caregivers of high school-aged children, but Shanna’s message is universal, offering inspiration and guidance for anyone committed to building stronger, more resilient communities.
Giving Back to Our Community At Calrossy, we believe in creating "Creators of Hope and Change that Matters". This event, supported by the P&F Association, and Tamworth Rotary Club, exemplifies our school’s mission of giving back to the community that has been such a strong supporter of our school. As Michael Wilson, School Development Coordinator, shares:
"Having Shanna share her story is a true privilege. We encourage everyone to join us for what will undoubtedly be a life-changing conversation, not just about alcohol, but about building resilience and supporting one another."
