The kiln has been fired up and this term we celebrated the official opening of its new Ceramics Hub. Years of planning and preparation have culminated in this exceptional addition to the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Faculty and it is already making a significant impact on the creative experiences of students and staff alike.
“We are blessed to have had the support of both the School and the P&F, all of whom have been enthusiastic advocates for this initiative, allowing us to equip the Hub with excellent resources including a professional kiln, high-quality tools, and an ambient workspace,” shares Jessica Clark, Head of CAPA.
“The Ceramics Hub is not just a facility; it's a space that fosters creativity and hands-on learning. Clay work provides students with a tactile creative outlet while supporting the development of fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, spatial awareness, and self-expression.”
The opportunities for artistic exploration are endless, and the new Hub is already demonstrating its value within the School's creative and wellbeing initiatives
In conjunction with the P&F, the School recently completed its first ceramics-inspired fundraiser for Christmas, welcoming students from Prep to Year 6 to get hands-on experience in the Ceramics Hub. Additionally, Year 9 and 10 Visual Arts students have embraced clay work, exploring increasingly sophisticated techniques as part of their class projects. The Hub has also extended its reach beyond students—during the latest Wellbeing Week, all School staff were invited to engage in clay work, adding a creative outlet to their self-care practices.
P & F President Andrew Yeo says “The Calrossy P & F jumped at the opportunity to be involved in the establishment of the Ceramics Hub. When Head of CAPA, Jessica Clark, initially approached us for support it was unanimously supported. Then in partnership with the CAPA Department we worked alongside them at a canteen day down at Tamworth Rugby Park along with a few other initiatives. This then meant we were able to invest $5,700 to purchase a slab roller – banding wheels and an extruder. All of this equipment will provide a unique opportunity for the students to learn about ceramics into the future.”
“We were overwhelmed by the response to the Junior School Christmas Ornaments fundraiser from the community. I also wanted to sincerely thank all of the Junior School, Administration and CAPA staff for your efforts in making this come to life,” says Mr Yeo.
This new Ceramics Hub marks just the beginning of what promises to be an inspiring journey for the School community. With its excellent facilities and focus on creativity, the Hub is poised to support students' artistic growth and enrich Calrossy's vibrant culture of creative expression for years to come. We can't wait to see the masterpieces that will emerge from this exciting space and expect many of them will be hanging on the family Christmas tree soon.
