Calrossy Anglican School is excited to welcome back dozens of alumni when the tradition of Red Vs Blue Rugby returns this year on Saturday, October 5th. Among the returning graduates is our first-ever school-based trainee, Adam Woollard (Class of 2012). Adam’s journey from a school-based trainee to a mechanical engineer exemplifies the opportunities Calrossy provides. This pathway, which continues to grow at Calrossy, provides students with vocational opportunities and experience while they are still at school.
After graduating, he embarked on a diverse career path that began with a school-based traineeship as a heavy diesel mechanic at Peel Valley Machinery. Balancing work with studies at Tamworth TAFE, he later pursued a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Newcastle. His dedication and hard work, alongside support from mentors and peers, paved the way for his success. Today, he is contributing to Calrossy once again, working with Mick Ridley at M.R Services Air Conditioning to provide heating and cooling solutions for the new buildings at the William Cowper Campus.
Reflecting on his time at Calrossy, Adam fondly recalls the camaraderie and traditions that defined his school years. "I have a lot of memories within my time at William Cowper, from playing in Cowper’s 1st XV to just everyday banter with the boys," he shares. The old library, supervised by Mrs Lobban, was a hub of laughter and learning, while the boarding house provided opportunities to mentor younger students. His vivid recollections include spirited discussions about local footy teams, the Magpies and Pirates, and playful rivalries with mentors turned friends like Bart Leach and Conrad Starr.
He attributes much of his success to the practical experience gained through the school-based traineeship program at Calrossy. Beyond his professional achievements, Adam treasures his family life and the enduring friendships formed during his school days. Married to Sam, they have three children: Charlotte, three, and twins Amelia and Henry, who are one. His close-knit group of school friends, including the McIntosh brothers (Lachlan, Callum and Angus), Darcy Barker and Jack Kotris, remain integral parts of his life, underscoring the lasting bonds forged at Calrossy.
Adam will line up in the Red team in October. As he prepares to join the Red vs Blue rugby match, he shares a heartfelt message with current students: "No matter what people say about your education, don't let that stop you in life. Look at me; I was a three-day-a-week school kid who went from a farmer’s son to an agricultural mechanic to a mechanical engineer and now helping with the school where I can."
Calrossy Anglican School invites all community members to join us on October 5th for the Red vs Blue rugby match. This event celebrates the enduring connections within our school community. We look forward to welcoming back our alumni for a weekend of family fun and great rugby action.
