Calrossy recently welcomed back one of its own, Nash Tapp (Class of 2017), who returned for his final teaching placement from the University of Newcastle. Nash spent four weeks reconnecting with the School, diving into the classroom as a PE teacher and sharing plenty of laughs and lessons with students and staff.
For Nash, it was a bit of a full-circle moment.
“The students here are so respectful, and the staff have been incredibly supportive. It’s been a real privilege to come back and see Calrossy from the teacher’s perspective,” he shared.
He reckons being an Old Boy gave him a bit of street cred with the students too. “I think it helped that they knew I’d been in their shoes – although they did give me a bit of a hard time when they found out!”
Nash has fond memories of his time as a student at Calrossy, crediting teachers like Conrad Starr and Todd McDonald for helping him become the person he is today. He expects to finish his degree in Secondary Education majoring in Health and PE mid way through next year.
“Starry really showed me the value of discipline and perseverance, especially on the sporting field. And Todd – wow. He made sure Lachlan Fogarty and I could study Engineering Studies even though the class wasn’t running. He came in every Wednesday morning at 7:30 to teach us. That kind of effort sticks with you.”
He’s got plenty of great stories too, like the time the 2017 Friday Night Rugby Grand Final team stormed the field at the final whistle.
“Seeing everyone rush the field – that’s a moment I’ll never forget,” he said.
Nash is still in touch with lots of his mates from school and loves catching up with them at Old Boys games and reunions.
As a budding teacher, Nash says he’s learned a lot about what makes a great educator. “The best teachers are role models who really care about their students, set high but fair goals, and take the time to listen. That’s the kind of teacher I want to be.”
So what’s next for Nash? He’s got big plans to travel after graduation, maybe even working overseas for a while, but hasn’t ruled out a return to Calrossy down the track. “I’ll always listen to offers from a school like this. For now, though, I think Starry and Langey have a few good years left in them!” he joked.
If any alumni are thinking about where to do their prac, Nash can’t recommend Calrossy enough. “The staff have been amazing, the students are great, and the experience has been so much more valuable than I expected. The PE team has been incredible, giving me opportunities to grow and develop my style. I’d definitely encourage others to give it a go!”
It’s been fantastic having Nash back on campus, sharing his knowledge and reconnecting with the school community. We can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next – and maybe, one day, we’ll be welcoming him back again as part of the Calrossy teaching team!
