R U OK? Day - a day of connection & hope

It’s a simple question that could change a life and was the focus of an inspiring day at Calrossy recently.  Last week, Calrossy came together for its second student-led R U OK? Day, an event filled with energy, hope, and heartfelt connection. Spearheaded by a passionate student committee, the day aimed to spark meaningful conversations around mental health and create a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable reaching out for help.

The highlight of the day was the special guest speaker, Sam Bailey, who captivated the audience with his incredible life story. Sam, a farmer, pilot, and bestselling author, shared how he overcame the adversity of becoming a quadriplegic after a tragic car accident. His journey is one of resilience, determination, and unwavering hope. Speaking directly to the hearts of Calrossy students, Sam inspired everyone to persevere in the face of challenges and to never underestimate the power of a positive mindset.

“Sam Bailey’s story is a reminder to all of us that no matter what life throws our way, we can rise above it,” shared one Year 10 student. “His courage and determination have left a lasting impact on us all.”

Beyond the inspiring talks, the day was packed with fun and engaging activities designed to unite the School community and promote mental wellbeing. One of the crowd favourites was the lively student vs. teacher volleyball match, where both teams played with enthusiasm and good-natured rivalry. Students from Years 3 to 10 were also treated to free R U OK? merchandise, proudly worn as a symbol of solidarity and support. A delicious BBQ lunch brought everyone together, offering a chance to relax and chat while enjoying the warm spring weather.

But it wasn’t just about the fun—mental health professionals from Headspace, Hunter New England Mental Health Services, and Centacare were present throughout the day, providing students with valuable resources and support. Their presence underscored the importance of having accessible help when it’s needed, reinforcing the message that it’s always OK to ask for support.

This year’s R U OK? Day was truly a student-driven event, made possible by the hard work and dedication of the organising committee. Bronte Gillan, Phoebe Jarratt, Annicka McCulloch, Izzy Whitby, Chloe McEvoy, and Bec Sams poured their hearts into making the day a success.

“These girls have been incredible,” said a fellow student. “Their commitment to raising awareness about mental health is inspiring. We owe the success of this day to their vision and tireless efforts.”

Behind the scenes, staff members Todd McDonald and Michael Wilson played crucial roles in bringing the event to life. “I couldn’t have done it without them,” says Bronte Gillan.

“They’ve worked tirelessly over the past few months to ensure everything ran smoothly, and we’re so grateful for their support.”

Reflecting on the personal significance of the day, shared a deeply moving story, Bronte says “A few years ago, I lost a family friend to suicide. It was heartbreaking, and it’s something that has stayed with me ever since. That’s why I’m so passionate about events like R U OK? Day—it’s about making sure no one feels alone. We need to have these conversations, not just today, but every day.”

Calrossy’s R U OK? Day was a powerful reminder of the School’s commitment to wellbeing, inclusivity, and creating a community where everyone feels supported. By fostering open conversations about mental health, the School is nurturing students who are resilient, compassionate, and empowered to make a difference in the world.
