What is Textiles and Design?
Textiles and Design at Calrossy encompasses a broad spectrum of skills and disciplines. Students learn about fabric technologies, sustainability, and design principles, with opportunities to explore fashion, interior design, and industrial textiles. The curriculum goes beyond practical sewing, incorporating elements of art, engineering, and even environmental science.
“This multidisciplinary approach ensures students gain a comprehensive understanding of the textiles industry, from concept to creation,” shares TAS Teacher, Ce-Anne Brennan.
All students study Textiles and Design in Year 8, with the choice of continue their studies in Year 9 – 10 and then for the HSC.

2024: A Year of Exceptional Talent
In 2024, seven remarkable students — Rachel Donaldson, Jessica Golland, Scarlett Gray, Chloe Thibault, Phebe McNamara, Ella Fitler, and Hannah Hurley — were nominated for possible inclusion in the prestigious SHAPE Exhibition. This honour recognises exemplary skill, creativity, and innovation in HSC major works. Being shortlisted for SHAPE is a significant accomplishment, highlighting the exceptional standard of design and craftsmanship fostered at Calrossy.
2023: Outstanding Results in the HSC
In 2023, Calrossy students Charlotte Bedggood, Charli Nixon, Grace O’Mullane, and Alex Hayes earned nominations for SHAPE, with their major works showcasing innovation and superior workmanship. Notably, Charlotte Bedggood achieved an extraordinary result, placing 6th in the State for Textiles and Design in the HSC. Charli Nixon went on to receive the ‘Cotton Australia Creative Design in Cotton Award’. The class as a whole excelled, with all students achieving Band 6 — the highest band possible — and results that were more than 5% above the State mean. These achievements reflect both the dedication of the students and the exceptional guidance of their teachers.
2022: Consistent Excellence
The success story continued in 2022, with 85% of students achieving a Top Band result in Textiles and Design. The class collectively outperformed the State average by an impressive 7%, solidifying Calrossy’s reputation for academic excellence in this subject area. Amelia Fauchon and Ellie Mathews were both nominated for Textstyle, with Amelia being chosen and she went on to receive the ‘Cotton Australia creative design in cotton award’
