Boarding - our heart of giving and service

At Calrossy, the values of service and selflessness are brought to life each year through the School’s participation in Operation Christmas Child . For nearly a decade, the Calrossy community has come together to pack and send shoeboxes filled with gifts to children in need across the world. Led by the boarding students, this initiative reflects the School’s commitment to creating agents of change and promoting gratitude through acts of kindness.

For Calrossy’s boarders , Operation Christmas Child has become more than just an event—it’s a way to reflect on life’s blessings and give back to others. Year 12 boarder Zoe Chappel says, “It helps me feel grateful for all I have.” Her classmate Elinor Brooks agrees, adding, “For me, it puts life issues in perspective.”

The project also deeply resonates with younger students. Year 7 boarder Mia Webster shares, “It makes me sad knowing there are children in the world going without. We take so much for granted. I hope we can make a difference in their lives this year.” Fellow Year 7 student Maggie Brown echoes this, saying, “Doing Christmas boxes makes me feel positive because I know I’m making a difference in someone else’s life.”

Last year, Calrossy sent 130 shoeboxes overseas—its largest contribution to date—thanks to the collective efforts of students from Prep to Year 12, boarding, and day school. This year, the School aims to exceed that number, with students, staff, and families already busy packing boxes. Donation boxes and tins are available in staff rooms, and collections are open at both the Brisbane Street and William Cowper receptions.

Maria Buster, who oversees the Boarder Wellbeing Program, says, Service is a long standing tradition at Calrossy “Serving and supporting those who have significant needs, both in our local community and the wider world, enhances our personal and collective wellbeing.”

Mrs Buster emphasises that giving back helps students understand the importance of gratitude and empathy. “By attempting to observe, understand, and show empathy towards others' needs, we are moved to be more compassionate and grateful for all we are fortunate to experience.”

In addition to Operation Christmas Child, Calrossy boarders regularly participate in local charity work, including serving breakfast at the Hillvue Breakfast Club and supporting charities like Serendipity and Share the Dignity, which focus on women’s wellbeing in the region. Calrossy also supports two children through Compassion, providing aid to Jemima in Uganda and Godfrey in Tanzania.

The spirit of giving at Calrossy runs deep. “It’s the joy of giving that enriches us all,” says Maria Buster, reflecting on the School's dedication to making a difference both locally and globally.
